Samsung has become the first choice for smartphones due to its popular Galaxy line of phones. With Galaxy series of phones Samsung has made an Android device for everyone. It comes with price variant, size variant etc. This time Samsung has come up with a successor model of the popular model Galaxy Grand and named it as Galaxy Grand 2, the model was announced in december 2013 and is finally available on Samsung India E-Store. Check out the array of features and specs below.
OS & Processor
This is the upgraded model of its predecessor. This device comes with a larger display and upgraded specs. This smartphone runs the latest Android OS 4.3 Jelly Bean on a 1.2GHz Quad-Core processor coupled with 1.5GB of RAM. This smartphone is upgraded and brings all the latest Apps support and compatibility on board.
Hardware
The older model, Galaxy Grand, came up with 5-inch WVGA resolution display. The latest Galaxy Grand 2 comes with a 5.25-inch display with HD resolution at 1280x720 pixels, which comes down to 280 pixels per inch density. The display supports multi-touch and is featured with ambient light sensors on top. The battery on this device is also upgraded and has a 2,600mAH power.
Camera & Memory
This smartphone comes with the set of cameras found in its older model. There is an 8MP rear camera for photography needs; the camera on the rear is capable of shooting HD videos. There is also a front camera with 1.9MP resolution which does a great aid in video calling. The camera on this device is supported by LED flash, touch focus and Geo-tagging. On the memory front this smartphones has an 8GB Storage capacity to offer. The user can also choose to upgrade the memory by installing a micro SD card up to 64GB.
Media & Connectivity
Android smartphones offer a perfect balance between entertainment and productivity. Phones these days are considered useless if it does not have good entertainment features or application support. This smartphone comes with a dedicated audio player and dedicated video player which can decode a lot of formats.
On the connectivity front, it has got 2 SIM card slots and a GPS for maps and other features. This smartphone supports 3G connectivity which helps one connect to high speed data connection and WiFi for wireless internet connection. It also supports connections on 2G, Edge and GPRS. There is Bluetooth for wireless device pairing and data transfer along with micro USB port for PC connectivity.
Samsung has put in the design cues of the Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy S4 device on this one. The device looks very much identical to the Galaxy S4 and features the faux leather back panel like the Galaxy Note 3. It has smaller bezels and features a longer body. The distribution of physical keys remains same on this device. Running through the device you will find the power key placed on the right, volume rocker on the left and the bottom of the device holds the micro USB port and primary microphone. The top of the device has the 3.5mm Audio jack which accepts all major music headphones. The overall design of the device is maintained with the Galaxy series of phones and a mere glance of the device will tell that its some Galaxy phone from Samsung.
Software & UI
Every mobile user wants the latest software in his/her smartphone. The Samsung Galaxy Grand 2 comes with Android 4.3 Jelly Bean Operating System and is likely to get Android 4.4 KitKat update in the coming months. Like any other Galaxy Device this one also features the Samsung TouchWiz on top of the Jelly Bean OS. The User Interface is not too attractive and it does not give a unique feel when using the phone, its just another Galaxy phone is what the feeling we had using this one.
The Samsung Galaxy Grand 2 is the successor model of the Galaxy Grand launched last year, and it has got some good upgrades over its predecessor. The first thing anyone would notice on the Grand 2 is its display, the display on Grand 2 comes with a little bigger size and better resolution. The older Grand came with a 5-inch WVGA display, the latest Grand 2 comes with a 5.25-inch HD display with a resolution of 1280x720 pixels. The touch sensitivity is also improved to a greater level and offers very fast response to touch gestures.
On the processing front this device boasts a Quad-Core processor clocked at a speed of 1.2GHz per core, the processor is accompanied by a 1.5GB RAM making the device faster than its predecessor. Multi tasking works amazingly well on this device, switching between apps and launching a new app works very fast. It supports HD games and 1080p video playback without any lags and frame drops. Battery is a major concern for most Android users, we dint get to use the device for longer but in our encounter with the device the battery dint lose too much of juice while testing it. We speculate that the 2,600mAh battery to last for one full day for average users.
Like we said earlier it is an upgraded model of the Galaxy Grand, it comes with multiple upgrades in the hardware and software departments. The upgrades on the device make it a grander smartphone than its predecessor, during our review session we bombarded the phone with multiple full HD videos and games. We ran as many as 15 applications simultaneously to make it report an error or force close application, but that dint happen! Thanks to the Quad-Core processor and the 1.5GB RAM on board. We were completely satisfied with the performance of the phone.
The camera on this device remain same as its predecessor, it has an 8MP rear facing camera with LED flash and a 1.9MP front facing camera. The rear camera takes good day light photos, night photography or low light photography on this phone is average. The front camera does a good job making video calls, it takes some good selfie photos too (day light use of front camera is good, low light is poor). The rear camera is capable of shooting full HD videos at 1080p resolution.
The Media playback on this device is excellent, the HD display offer great visuals and viewing angles. This device has dedicated player for music and video playback, both the players come with multi format playback support. It also supports playback of full HD videos without any lags as mentioned earlier. The presence of Google Playstore makes this a perfect smartphone; one can download productivity apps and games to enhance the user experience with the device.
